Customer Reviews:

Description and Condition were very poor1
This unit arrived in a shrink wrapped plain white box with the model number GR-BC3 sticker on the box and the product. However, the one I got looks very much different than the one on the Amazon web site. Additionally, it came with two AAA Duracell batteries already installed, and LEAKING! Residue from the leak had stained through to the outside of the battery compartment. It is as if this was a return or factory refurb shipped out without any thought of quality control.

Customer Reviews:

Best for the money4
I bought the Opteka 15″ frame after reading all the reviews I could find for similar products. What struck me is that people’s experience with Opteka seemed consistently good. My unit worked great out-of-the-box with no dead pixels, no need for image brightness/contrast adjustment, or other startup problems. The Opteka has all the key features you need at an excellent price.

Other reviewers have covered the basics well: The attractive wood frame, good picture quality, both random and sequential slide shows, and relatively simple operation. I agree with the other reviewers that this unit’s 4:3 ratio of image width to height is an important selling point for this model—I have thousands of photos with this aspect ratio and only a few with the widescreen ratio (stills from an HD video camera). So I’ll focus on some subtleties I haven’t seen covered in other reviews.

Picture quality: This seems subjective, especially since I didn’t see this frame side-by-side with its competitors. My standard of comparison was my Dell laptop screen, which has a similar physical screen size but 1280x 800 instead of 1024×768 resolution. Running the same images in slideshows on the two devices, I thought the images on the Opteka looked better, with better shadow detail and vastly better viewing angles. Note that the surface of the digital frame is regular shiny glass rather than matte, “non-glare.” Reflections could be an issue–situate it in your room to minimize them.

Ease of setup: One of the other reviewers complained “To attach the adapter, one must remove a panel from the back of the product. Once the adapter cord is installed in the jack, the panel can not be replaced on the back of product.” This is wrong, there’s no design flaw here. The design is actually quite elegant and saves having an external power brick dangling on your wall or floor. If at first the compartment door doesn’t close, flip the transformer brick over and then the door will close nicely. You’ll need a small Phillips head screwdriver to open and reclose the panel door. Just over 4.5 feet of cord extends out the bottom of the frame, so plan on placement near an outlet or power strip.

Ease of use: Once the unit is assembled, all you need to do is plug in your memory card or flash drive. The unit automatically displays a slideshow from internal memory if no cards are plugged in. But when you turn the Opteka off, then insert a card or flashdrive and turn it back on, it’s smart enough to automatically switch to displaying images from the new source. Now that’s ease of use! (What if you insert both an SD card and a flashdrive? The unit will still automatically start a slideshow, but you may need to use the menus specify which image source to use.) One minor ergonomic flaw for SD card users: too little of the SD card protrudes from the card slot to provide a decent grip for removal. If you plan on swapping SD cards while visiting someone, pack tweezers!

Randomness: When you select random image display, there’s no duplicate prevention—by chance the same image may re-appear 30 seconds later. Also, the handy feature of using the remote to re-display the previous slide (to show someone else or simply get a longer look at it) works only in sequential mode. In random mode pressing the back button on the remote does not re-display the image you just saw.

Ability to handle LOTS of pictures: Presented with a flash drive that had over 4,000 pictures in a single folder, the frame handled this volume of images fine, with a couple of quirks. Not surprisingly, it was less responsive navigating through some of the menus, but the most noticeable effect was the slideshow timing became erratic in random playback, ranging from a few seconds to about a minute. If you don’t have the fast slideshow speed (choices of slow, medium, fast) selected, you probably won’t care. (Sequential playback speed was consistent even with thousands of images. Some processing the frame is doing in random playback mode is taking a variable amount of time…)

Is internal memory in a digital frame a complete waste? My first thought: With a 4GB SDHC card now available from Amazon for less than $10, the 128MB or more of internal memory many of these frames have is essentially a vestigial feature likely to disappear in the next generation. My second thought: the internal memory would be useful as a “favorites” repository. Suppose that as Grandpa watches a slideshow of a new batch of pictures, he sees one he really likes. He presses the remote’s “setup” button to freeze the slideshow on the current picture and to display an option for copying the picture to internal memory. Next month you drop by Grandpa’s house and swap the flash drive in the Opteka with a new one containing the latest batch of family pictures. Grandpa then saves his favorites from that new batch of pictures to internal memory. Thus, he builds his own “best of” collection over time.

Zooming: The remote control lets you zoom in several times to make a portion of the image fill the frame. I had hoped that if I zoomed the image on the frame I would be able to see, for example, facial expressions more clearly–many people zoom in on group photos on their digital cameras’ LCD screens to check for eye blinks, for example. No such luck. The frame dynamically re-sizes the image to 1024 x 768 resolution immediately before displaying it and does NOT use the original hi-res image to zoom in. So zooming isn’t worth much - it just give you a steadily more pixelated view as you zoom in.

Video playback: The unit can play the 640×480 resolution, 30 frames per second AVI-format movies produced by my Canon digital cameras, but playback is NOT smooth (maybe 15 frames per second). Look at other units if you want video playback (a nice-to-have feature for me).

Power save: Some frames have motion sensors to turn them on when they sense someone is in the room. The Opteka does not, but it does have power options “Always on”, or 2, 4, or 8 hour auto-shutoff.

Net, some room for improvement. Excellent overall.

OK but buggy 15″ digital frame3
The Opteka is an ok 15″ Digital Picture frame. It is attractive and has a bright, crisp wide angle display (1024×768). But it has some major bugs as of the model available in Oct 2009.

As of the model I got in Oct 2009 from Amazon (price around $180 at the time), there are some details in the description and some reviews which are no longer accurate — the frame is being updated/changed over time. Apparently this is the 3rd or 4th revision (according to the tech support guy with whom I had some long conversations).

Relevant items that are correct:
- the manual is horribly written
- 4:3, 1024×768, wood frame
- has a remote
- auto displays from card inserted into frame

Changes:

Description said: “Wall mountable in landscape mode” - the unit I got could be wall mounted in either portrait or landscape mode although landscape is more natural so it puts the on/off switch on the side. Based on the frame orientation (on desk or on wall) the frame auto rotates images so that pictures appear with the correct side up depending on whether the frame is oriented in landscape or portrait mode.

Reviews on June 5, 2008 and Dec 11, 2008 said that it had a panel at the back to contain the AC adapter. This was not true of the model I got — there was no AC adapter compartment at all. Although there was a large “notch” where the AC adapter could be taped/velcroed into place behind the frame. I did this so I could hang it on a wall where I have a plug in the middle of the wall and not have any cords showing (a separately purchased flat right angle plug adapter helped tremendously).

Review on Dec 11, 2008 said “Ability to handle LOTS of pictures: Presented with a flash drive that had over 4,000 pictures in a single folder” — well I put an SD card in with 1519 pictures and it would not display them. I used a PC to transfer all of them to internal memory, it still would not display any of them — just left me in menu mode. It would not display pictures individually either — would not even show file names. When I organized the pictures into separate folders of 400 or so each, then it finally would display them.

Another review said it was hard to remove SD cards, this is no longer correct. SD cards pop in and out easily using the push in to pop out release mechanism common in cameras.

Other notes:

I could not find a way to have the frame display pictures in a random order from an SD Card — they always seem to start from the beginning and proceed forward in order.

The pictures start automatically when the frame turned on (some frames I’ve had require user intervention).

***IMPORTANT #1*** It is extremely hard to transfer pictures from inserted memory card into built in memory — you must manually select each picture to move and then move it using remote — very tedious. Other frames I’ve had would auto load all images from a card — this is much more convenient. The only way to mass move pictures onto the frame’s built in memory is using a Windows PC (according to the manual) and the supplied USB cable — in which case the frame pretends it is a 1GB USB drive and you do all the loading from the PC side. Strangely when you put the frame into this PC USB mode by hooking it up, the frame displays a picture of a current day Apple iMac — weird. This transfer mechanism means that Grandpa would have a hard time loading up new pictures. But you could send new SD cards to him periodically to pop in the side of the frame.

***IMPORTANT #2*** The frame has some odd bugs. If you have more than 500 or 600 pictures in any given directory, it will refuse to show any pictures. I copied 1519 pictures on the the frame as well as onto an SD card and the frame would only display the menu, would never display any pictures. When I separated pictures into folders of 400-500 each, it would then display pictures. But after a while we noticed that it would rotate through only the same set of 400-500 or so. It would never display the others. I could not figure out any rhyme or reason behind the order of display or why it chose only those.

The remote is hard to use — must be directly in front of frame and fairly close. Buttons are hard to push accurately — sometimes you cannot seem to press a button and other times it gets double clicked when you meant to only push it once.

I wish more digital picture frames had auto IR sensors to pause and turn off when no one was in the room and then turn on again when someone enters the room but it doesn’t. It does allow you to set it to turn on and off once a day automatically based on it’s internal clock. I did not find any other automatic ways to turn it off and on.

Overall I’m ok with the frame as it looks good on our dining room wall, for the jpegs it displays it displays them well, has no cords hang down from it, and is easy to turn off and on using the switch on its side. I really wish it had an IR sensor, would load pictures from memory cards more easily, would pick up showing photos wherever it left off and/or show photos randomly, and would actually display all pictures loaded into it or on memory cards inserted on it.

Insanely LARGE viewing angles, 4:3, its 15″, Bright and it shuffles. What more do you want.5
Ok, I was hesitant to buy this digital photo frame like everyone else. All I had to go buy was 1 review here from Amazon. I took a nose dive though and went for it.

When I took it out of the box I noticed it was just like a real picture frame, it has actually real wood on the outside and glass over the frame.
It comes with a remote control which is very easy to use after some tinkering with it.

The instructions are horrible, but lots of instructions for these frames are horrible. So just figure it out on your own, its not hard.

The ONE most HORRIBLE thing I have about this device is the A/C adapter, you have to unscrew a panel at the back then place the A/C adapter in it then close the thing and the cord can’t even hang out! So prepare to mod your frame if your wall mounting. I used double adhesive tape on the a/c adapter so it stays on.

But as for the picture itself, its crisp and vibrant. You can adjust the contrast, brightness, tint, and color by pressing setup at any picture on the remote.

It takes flash drives along with tons of other SD cards. Reads flash drives no problem, it also SCALES images VERY well. I had a 400 X 600 image and it scaled it no problem but for best results use a high resolution image and scale it down.

It’s 4:3 so no stretching of images, has a LARGE viewing angle which is insane for if your wall mounting. It looks nice and stylish.
You can random mode the pictures so it shuffles through them and change transitions. Fast, Medium, Slow are the speeds I believe slow is 10 seconds. Which is enough for me.

Only takes Jpeg files from what I have seen which is fine, its standard format. Takes a large variety of Jpegs and loads a little slower with large files but your suppose to scale the image down anyway.

Sound quality is a bit thin, but you didn’t buy this for sound? Did you?

Video haven’t tried…. Honestly I don’t want to try. I bought this to display images, I have a HDTV for film clips.

This digital photo frame is the best, hands down. If your nervous about the company or brand don’t be.

Don’t have any doubt to get it. But it will take some time to setup.

Get it.

Customer Reviews:

My Experiences with the Canon MF4370DN4
I bought this about a week ago and have been using it ever since. I have a Mac and finding a multifunction unit that is Mac compatible hasn’t been easy. This unit, the MF4370DN, works great with my Mac. The lower models, the MF4350D and the MF4150D are NOT completely Mac compatible.

I couldn’t find any reviews for this item - so I will tell you everything I can about it.

I know there is some comparable Brother models out there, but have heard they surge the power in the room. I haven’t tested them, but I have a Brother laser printer and it makes all the lights in my home office dim when it gets ready to print. Also that model doesn’t duplex print (print/copy on both sides of the page. The MF4370DN does.)

This unit works great with my Mac - it scans, prints, copies, and receives faxes. I originally bought the Canon MF4350d which despite all the information I read is not entirely mac compatible, its scanner is not compatible with Macs, which was confirmed for me by talking with a Canon rep. It would be nice if they mentioned that on their website specs instead of wasting hours of my time and then having to drive 70 miles to return it. (I didn’t buy it from Amazon because they didn’t have it at the time.)

Canon support told me the MF4370dn is entirely mac compatible - just hit the Scanner button on it twice so it is in “USB SCANNING MODE.”

Overall I’m pretty happy with this unit. The print quality is great, the faxing speed and quality is much faster than my old thermal fax. The copier works great. The scan quality off the glass is great. The duplexing feature works great. Unit is very, very quiet - in fact I can’t hear it when it’s on or sleeping.

Now I can finally get rid of three bulky devices - my fax, laser printer, and scanner, and replace it with this one unit.

Cons:
1) No software comes with this unit that allows you to create a single PDF from the Auto Document Feeder. So if I wanted to scan 10 pages through the feeder and create a single PDF it can’t do it. It would create 10 different documents in your scanning program, then you would have to save each one as a PDF and use another program to create a single PDF. After hours of research I discovered Acrobat Professional can create a single PDF directly off the auto document feeder. Acrobat Professional is an expensive program at $449 which is available for Mac. I happen to have it and used it successfully to create a multipage pdf. On Acrobat Professional you go to FILE > CREATE PDF > FROM SCANNER. It worked great. But some kind of software should really be supplied from Canon that can do that. Most people are not going to have Acrobat Professional and certainly won’t buy a $450 program just to be able to use a $300 device. I know there is some scanning software that comes with the unit, but it’s for Windows (and not sure what it can do.)

2) Auto document feeder also is giving me some trouble - it is scanning letter size pages as legal size. So there is all this white area at the bottom of my scans. Something I will have to talk to Canon about how to fix, if possible.

3) My home phone number doubles as my fax line so I run the telephone line from the wall into the unit — and then then out to my phone. Whenever I use my phone to make a call - the MF4370DN turns on and starts to blink “Processing Data” and a green light on the side of the unit starts to blink as well. And it stays on for the whole call. Now when I talk on the phone I gotta see this light blinking in my periphery. Kind of annoying and a waste of energy if you ask me.

4)The instructions for using the scanner were not very clear. I installed what I thought was a scanning program on a CD that came with the device. After I installed it I thenspent ages looking for the scanning application which I just installed. Turns out there is no application, instead what you are really installing is the driver. You need to use your own scanning program - I use Photoshop.

5) Every time I want to scan something I need to push the Scan button twice on the device to put it into USB scan mode. It would be nice if it would automatically detect how it was going to transmit. Also you have 1.5 to 2 minutes from when you push SCAN twice to when the machine puts itself to sleep. So a few times now I have tried to scan and couldn’t because the SCAN option timed out on the machine.

6) The manual is not Mac friendly. If it was it would have saved me a couple hours figuring out most of the above. I had to call Canon 3 times or so to get the kinks worked out.

But I must say that Canon technical support is bar none the best customer support I have ever experienced. A human will pick up the phone almost immediately and you are speaking to an educated, polite, sympathetic, and a very knowledgeable person who’s first language is english and they live here in the good ol’ USA. A+ on that Canon.

Despite the problems settings this up - I am happy with my purchase. As I am the first person to review this I am glad to pass on what I learned to help others make an informed choice and if you happen to buy it I hope that I helped save you some time setting it up.

Thanks!

Good Printer but has some flaws3
I bought the printer about 3 weeks ago. It prints well, faxes great, but the scanning is where if falls short.

It came with the canon software for enabling to scan over the network. The box says it scans at 600 x 1200, but that ONLY from the USB connection. The network scanning limits you to only 300dpi. Customer support says I can get the full 600 if i connect the USB port. But the reason I bought it was to use via the network! Sounds like they weren’t honest in their product description.

I would recommend another printer such as the comparable brother but I have had a lot of bad experiences with my previous brother products so I will stick with this one despite its shortcoming and hopefully wait for a firmware or software up date that will allow the full scanning resolution via the network.

Definately great… considering price point!4
Keep in mind, it wasn’t too long ago when you had to purchased a $600+ printer to get the features of this one. Also, I do not like Brother printers. They are the generic brand of printers and have barely been supported by electronic retailers until recently.

This is my second Canon laser jet. The first was an all in one (print, copy, scan) MF1330. While it made flawless copies; it had no fax, could only connect to one PC through USB, and lacked the ADF (automatic document feeder). I have three PC’s in my house. Two desktops and one laptop. The two desktops are running 64-bit Vista, and I have searched high and low for a modem that would work with a 64-bit OS. The only ones I found are not natively supported in Vista and cost $80+. The others were all external. If you don’t know this, the Canon laser jets have a very fast first page out time. So when they say 23 pages per minute, it doesn’t mean after a two minute warm up period. When you click print the PC (depending on speed) takes a few seconds plus to process before sending. With my computer, the entire print process took about 5 seconds before the page was being printed. Very nice! Imediately I noticed how quiet this printer is compared to my last canon and my Oki C5200ne color laser. Amazing for a laser jet. I hope they didn’t sacrifice life expectancy or something else to get it.

I was a little disappointed. This printer didn’t turn out to be everything I thought it would be, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. First of all, you must know Windows Fax & Scan does not work with this printer. That is the let down of the year to me, but it’s not Canon’s fault… not necessarily. Turns out WF&S only uses WIA scanning drivers and this printer uses TWAIN. Thanks Microsoft. The computer never directly communicates with the printer, so the faxing is treated like printing. As a result, the faxing portion of the software doesn’t work with it either.

This printer DOES come with software for scanning. It’s burried on the CD, and you must explore the CD to find it. I believe it’s only for the PC, however. As the other poster said, I searched all over for the scanning software I thought I installed. Turns out it was just a driver. I own Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, so it’s not much of a concern for me. They are both TWAIN compatible by the way. One thing I don’t like about this printer is the need to press the scan button prior to scanning. This is not very convenient for a network printer. It’s even worse if you have a long way to go to get back to your PC. By the time you get there, the thing may have gone back into power saving mode.

Still with it’s flaws, it’s definately a great buy compared to similar products of the past (which were bulkier, louder, and more expensive). It does what it says it can do. Print (double sided at that), scan over the network, fax from your PC, and it’s also voice line friendly! (No need for a dedicated fax line)It’s a great buy.

Very poor Netflix performance; overall disappointment so far.2
I’ve had this player for several days now. Blu-Ray playback appears to be good, although I don’t really have anything to compare it to. But so far its other attributes leave a great deal to be desired.

Netflix playback is especially poor. I waited to buy this unit for its Netflix capability to kick in, and was using the Roku HD player in the meantime. Even with a wired connection, the Sony’s Netflix HD content playback is noticeably sluggish and jerky, almost to the point of being unwatchable, compared to the Roku player connected wirelessly to the same router. I watched parts of the same video on each player and the difference is not subtle; it is pronounced.

Also, the upscaled DVD picture on this player is very, VERY soft, almost to the point of looking out of focus, even with the TV’s Sharpness setting turned up to maximum. This is in comparison to the Sony DVP-NS700H upscaling DVD player I had been using previously, which appears to have a sharper, crisper image; again, the difference is noticeable.

I’m going to try a few more DVDs and see if Sony and/or Netflix tech support can address the streaming problem, before I give up and return the unit. I had hoped this player would be a nice addition to my BRAVIA setup (46″ Z4100 LCD TV), but so far it’s let me down.

UPDATE: I called Sony and went through three levels of support. They agreed with my description and assessment of the Netflix HD picture quality and told me there was nothing that could be done about it. I also called Netflix and they couldn’t help either; none of their suggestions worked. If I can’t resolve this myself I’m going to have to return the player.

UPDATE 2: Amazon on Demand HD video looks fine; very good, actually. Looks like this is a Netflix issue (probably the onboard software, not the stream, since Netflix still looks fine on the Roku) that will have to be fixed with a firmware update sometime in the future.

UPDATE 3: CNET has now reviewed this product. From their review of the player’s Netflix performance: “We also noticed that the overall streaming video quality seemed to be slightly worse than we’re used to seeing. We saw more “jerky” playback than we’re used to seeing on other players”.

UPDATE 4: The Sony firmware update issued on December 22 has had no effect on the Netflix HD streaming quality. It looks the same as it did before.

UPDATE 5: For reasons unrelated to this issue, I upgraded my cable internet service to Cablevision’s “Optimum Boost,” which among other things is supposed to more than double Internet speed. Indeed, I’m now seeing over 20 Mbps on [...]. Nevertheless, the problem remains; the Netflix HD video is still “jerky”. Apparently the problem is not the network. I think it may be that the Sony does a poor job handling the Netflix stream compared to the Amazon stream, such as, e.g., upconverting from 720p to 1080p.

UPDATE 6: I did some more experimenting with the player, this time removing the HDMI connection and using component instead, setting the player’s component output to 720p. This did not correct the jerky motion problem; it looked essentially the same.

Love it5
I wanted a Blu-ray player for two main reasons, 1) to watch Netflix on my TV, and 2) to watch Star Trek: The Original Series (Enhanced) on Blu-ray. I returned an LG BD 390 because a stupid icon kept popping up every time an “alternate angle”/enhanced scene appeared during an episode. This was many times during each episode. It’s only on the screen for a few seconds, but you can’t turn it off. Contacted LG and they said you can’t turn it off and they weren’t planning a firmware update to fix it - unacceptable. So now I have the Sony and I am thrilled. No more icon, and I like the option of turning off other icons like “play” and “pause”. I think the load time is fine - fast enough for me. I’m anxious to get the Netflix firmware update to try that out. I don’t need a wireless Blu-ray as I have wired my basement to get more reliable video streaming. I am very satisfied with this player.

Update as of 11/11/09 - Netflix enabled! Works beautifully so far. Watched a bit of “The Office”. Video quality very good. My TV says it was 1080p - cool. I’m guessing that most of the Netflix content will be standard def., though. I watched a few minutes of Enemy Mine and the quality was OK - about like Netflix is on my computer. I’m getting pretty spoiled by hi-def. video after watching Blu-ray movies. Anyway, Netflix is easy to do. Just add movies to your Watch Instantly queue (on your PC), and they’re there on TV. Brilliant.

Sony BDP-N460: The PS3 Replacement5
This player is everything the PS3 should be, just without the games. The PS3 was a constant annoyance with the Bluetooth remote, poor game choice, and the lack of any service such as Netflix (the PS Network seemed to have a rather limited selection)… So I decided to liquidate the system and get back in the blu-ray player market.

When this unit loads up, you might think that it is a PS3–the menu is almost exactly the same. The relevant difference is the video options. This is where that laundry list of online video service providers is found. What a list! If all this player could do was play Netflix, it might not be such a compelling player–but it does a lot more than that. What convinced me to buy this unit was it’s ability to play Amazon On Demand. It seemed ironic to me that this was not originally an advertised feature on Amazon’s website. I had to do some research to verify this capability. In fact, it was a deal-maker for me.

If the PS3 did everything this player does, then I would say to pay a little more and enjoy the near-zero load times and wireless–but it doesn’t. Not even close. The PS3 is currently locked into Sony’s limited first-party services. This player hopefully signals the future for players, by adding every provider available.

Pros:
- Bravia sync (if you have a compatible Sony television)
- TONS of providers
- Load times are nominal
- Firmware updates were quick out of the box
- Excellent up-conversion of DVD titles
- Lights on player are not at all distracting (and can be adjusted)

Cons:
- Even though I am 1080p resolution, the xcross (system) menu looks low-res.
- Netflix is “coming fall 2009″, so there will be a wait on that for now

So far this player highly recommended!

UPDATE: As of 11/11/2009, Netflix is now available. Works flawlessly!

Coronado SolarMax 40 Telescope / BF10 <0.7 Angstrom Description:

The SolarMax 40 system allows for full H-A views of the sun. This Telescope includes the T-Max tuner and 5 mm blocking filter. The blocking filter is housed ina 1.25″ diagonal. This combination allows for a full disc image The Advantage of the T-Max: Some events on the Sun,- notably active flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are extremely fast moving. If such features occur on the disc of the Sun, their high velocity towards the observer results in their wavelength being Doppler shifted shorter than Ha. If the velocity is high enough, this wavelength could be outside the passband of the filter and the feature would not be observable. The T-Max allows the user to de-tune the SolarMax slightly to bring such phenomena into better visibility. A simple rotary wheel movement accomplishes the tilt necessary to move the passband of the filter. Because of the filter’s position at the front end of the telescope, this does not compromise the performance of the filter nor limit the Ha field of view as is the case with rear mounted filters. MaxScope 40 was reviewed in Sky & Telescope August 2002 issue and has been awarded a “Hot Product for 2002″ award by the magazine The use of a special H-Alpha doublet lens designed by Dick Buchroeder (including optimised anti-ghosting) and superb multi-layer anti reflection coatings on all surfaces delivers diffraction limited, extremely high contrast performance.
